This short story is a bit hard to explain what the origin of it is simply because I can’t remember! I do know that it was for a short story competition that my local library was running, and that is only had like a 200 word limit with a set theme. What the exact details were I have no idea; I never made a note of it.
In saying that, this short story is meant to a bit of a social commentary. Discussing the idea of how we push people away based on gender, race, wealth etc. but also from that how we can come together and create a new support system and chosen family.
That’s about all I can share about the reasoning behind it. So here it is, my short short story.
A Man, A Woman, A Boy, A Girl
A man, a woman, a boy, a girl. Four strangers. Two rich, two poor. Two white, two not. Who have never met before. Meet, and despite everything become friends.
Society kept trying to push them away from each other, but they stuck together. Their bond of friendship stronger than anything else. When times were tough, they held each other and promised to never let go.
One day the man dies. Then the woman dies.
The boy and girl, no longer children, now young adults ready to face the injustice of the world. They stayed together. Their friendship is no longer, they are now in love. He is going to marry her. She is pregnant with his child. Both of them only have each other, all their other friends left them, all their family disowned them. That will never hold them back, no matter what society says.
I like the brevity and the sentiment. Well done.
