I have loved writing since, well, I could write! I’ve always made up stories and characters. I’m currently working on a book series that brings together many of the places and characters I have created throughout my life. This isn't about that though, this is about the other writings I have done.
My laptop is full of short stories and poems. Some that I will never share, but the rest I want to, So I thought I would use this platform to share some of my writing and tell you a bit of the history and thinking behind them if I can remember (some of them I wrote years and years ago!).
I just feel that this blog is a good place to share them, as I want it to be a bit like a diary, a depiction of my life, memories, experiences, feelings and opinions, and what expresses those more than things written in the moment or the height of emotion. Some of them are also travel-related, describing places I have been to.
I’m starting this journey, for lack of a better word, with a poem called ‘My Story’.
I wrote it in 2011 while are University if you didn’t already know I studied Creative Writing and have a Bachelor of Arts in it. I wanted a poem to start, or open, the assignment we were working on at the time, which was a collection of works, and this is what I came up with. So what better poem to start this all off.
Enjoy!
My Story
My story,
Is one you’ve never heard,
It’s the same as all the others,
Yet different,
How absurd.
It lines the pages,
Of the paper in this room.
None of them make sense,
Or link,
But it’s all so very true.
It tells about,
All the things I’ve felt.
The days when it rained,
The days in the sun.
It is stories that I have written,
But they have never been about me.
They are dreams,
I have dreamt late in the night,
Day-dreams I have thought of,
When I’m out and about.
They tell of,
Handsome princes,
That always saves the day.
The beautiful Princess,
Who is no damsel in distress.
The cliché bad guy,
Who never gets his way.
Of Love and peace and happiness,
Of glory and triumph and victory.
If you look quite closely,
At the underlying text,
You will see quite clearly,
It tells the story of me.
It tells about,
All the things I have seen,
All the people I have met,
All the places I have been.
My story,
Is rather simple.
There is laughter and tears,
There is love and anger.
Just like any other
But none other is like mine.
So don’t turn away,
Or put down the book,
Keep reading
Keep watching
You never know,
What could come next.
Love the poem.
