Another great Bridgerton book. This one stood out to me for being a little more unexpected—there were some twists I genuinely didn’t see coming, which added a fresh layer of tension and excitement to the story.

Gregory’s journey felt a bit different from his siblings’, and I appreciated that. The romance had its ups and downs, and while it followed the familiar charm of the series, it still managed to surprise me in a few ways. As always, Julia Quinn’s writing is engaging and full of heart.

A strong addition to what’s already been a really wonderful series. I’ve truly enjoyed reading each book and watching all of these characters find their way.

While I loved Battle Royal more (the first book in the Palace Insider’s series), I still really enjoyed Codename Charming. It’s sweet, funny, and unexpectedly moving—a feel-good read all around.

Yes, you can see where things are headed, but that doesn’t take away from the payoff. It’s still so satisfying when it all comes together. The characters are wonderful—each one strong in their own right—and the chemistry and charm really shine. Parker’s writing is sharp and witty, and I found myself laughing, cheering, cringing, and even crying (the happy kind!) right along with them.

A lovely addition to the series. I truly hope there’s more to come.

Like a lot of adult fantasy, this one took me a little while to really get into. Knowing how the romance would play out ahead of time didn’t help much with the suspense, either. But once I was caught up in the story, I genuinely enjoyed it.

One of the things I appreciate most about this series is how each book connects to the others—different perspectives, different voices, but all pieces of a larger timeline. It’s satisfying to see how the stories weave together into one cohesive arc. Definitely a strong addition to the series and a great read once it gets going.

Like the rest of the Bridgerton series, this one is fun and fluffy—very much a comfort read. But I have to admit, I was hoping for a little more this time around. More spark, more challenge, just… more something.

Hyacinth and Gareth are a cute pairing, and there were definitely enjoyable moments (Lady Danbury remains the MVP, as always). But the story didn’t quite have the same flair or charm as some of the earlier books. I also really wanted more resolution between Gareth and his father—that storyline felt like it was building to something meaningful, and then just sort of stopped.

That said, I still had a good time reading it. It’s light, sweet, and has its moments, even if it didn’t quite rise to the top of the series for me.

I liked the way the story moved between past and present—it gave the characters more depth and made the relationships feel real. The interactions between the friend group felt so familiar and relatable, like the kind I’ve had with my own friends.

Book Review: Fractalverse - Fractal Noise by Christopher Paolini

A great read and a solid addition to the Fractalverse. It was easy and engaging to get through—definitely more so than To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, probably because it’s about a third of the length.

I was really fascinated by the hole and the planet, and I finished the book with just as many questions about it as Alex did. It kept me thinking long after I was done.

I loved the constant thud throughout—it added such a cool, immersive layer to the story. It honestly felt like I was right there on Talos VII with the characters, hearing and feeling it right along with them.

Highly recommend the audiobook, too. The sound effects added so much atmosphere, and overall it was a fantastic listen—definitely worth it.

What can I say about this book to convey my enjoyment without revealing too much?

The High Mountain Court is full of all the things about Fantasy that I love: magic, quests, and a stunning setting.

It did take me a little to get into the story, to start with. It seemed to take me a long time to read the first 40% of the book. I can't give any specific reasons why this was the case; I was lost in the story from the first sentence. It was more about the need for world and character building. But once I crossed that 40% mark, I inhaled every single word and quite suddenly found myself at the end, sadly.

The characters are strong and likeable. You easily get to know every character that walks onto the pages. However, one note I would share is that not all is what it seems. While some of these elements I figured out early on, others came about unexpectedly. I would very much love to go on an adventure with any one of the fantastic characters that litter the pages of this book.

Hale and Remy's relationship is stunning and magical. That's all I will share on that front.

The world is stunning, and the detailed descriptions paint a clear picture of the different kingdoms. You can feel the heat, the cold, smell the ocean and the forests. All this makes it that much easier to get lost in the words.

You will not regret picking this up.

It's so well written, drawing you into the stories and characters. I love how everything and everyone is connected in some way. They pass each other on the street or something. It shows how small the world is and how connected we all are.

It's also about life, and asking the question: what would you do if you knew you were going to die? It reveals our humanity and mortality, reminding us to live. Be present, go for it, to not hold back. Ultimately, the world isn't bad; people are good, and why wait to live on your last day?

A great read. One that you will need tissues for.

I loved this book. I loved the characters and the way the story is told.

Adam Silvera writes in a very ‘addictive’ way, which makes you want to keep reading and draws you right into the story, world and setting. The First to Die at the End (and the whole Death-Cast series) discusses life and how we choose to live it.

I liked all the character interactions, especially those which link it to They Both Die at the End. I wanted to know more about what happens to Orion and Scarlet. I did cry so much while reading this, probably more than They Both Die at the End, because there is more of a goodbye in The First to Die at the End, and goodbyes always get me good!

I highly recommend these books; they are so good. I am looking forward to reading the next one, The Survivor Wants to Die at the End.

It's a historical romance that is friends to lovers, what isn't to love? Just like all the other Bridgerton books, it's well written and easy to read and satisfying too.

Review: Babel by R.F. Kuang

When I finished this book I have to admit that my thoughts and feelings towards it were a bit confused. The message that it teaches us is so important, (at the moment it seems even more important) how colonialism has oppressed so many peoples and cultures around the world. How the colonials looked down on those who looked different, who sounded different. And also the power of words and language.

Babel is well written and is unlike anything I have ever read before. A lot of research has obviously gone into the writing of it.

I did find it quite slow and hard to read, and I found my attention wandering at times. I also never really felt completely invested in any of the characters, it's a very plot-driven story.

I also wanted more of a resolution. But I think that was done on purpose. It may be set in a parallel world, but we are aware of what 'came next' in our world and where we are now in society and in our timeline.

It is an incredible and unique story, and I would recommend reading it if you haven't already. It did just leave me unsure of my feelings towards it, but I guess that is a 'feeling' towards it...

I enjoyed Heart of the Sun Warrior over Daughter of the Moon Goddess because all the world-building had been done, and I could just dive into the story.

I love that I never really knew how the story would play out. I couldn't predict it and thus had more of an impact because of it. And yes, I did cry in it.

I made note of 42 quotes from HofSW in my reading journal. Here are a couple of my favourites:

☀ "...Sometimes, by treating others with mistrust, you invite it upon yourself. By refusing to see the good in them, you might lose something precious that you never allowed yourself to find."

☀"The darkest of nights is when the stars shine brightest."

☀History was rewritten as it pleased the victor or buried when it was an inconvenient truth.

☀"There might be a field of flowers, yet all I need is one."
"Some flowers have thorns," I said coldly. "If you pluck them, you will get pricked."

I enjoyed Heart of the Sun Warrior over Daughter of the Moon Goddess because all the world-building had been done, and I could just dive into the story.

A fantastic story based on the true story of Alli Parker's grandparents. One that shows how one voice, one stubborn voice, can change a lot.

It's well-written and engaging throughout, showing the war-torn, devastated state of Japan, including the horrors from the atomic bombs, at the end of the war. It also shows the hate and fear, the prejudice that was in both Australia and Japan (and around the world) that was rife at this time (and is still out there today).

It's an incredible story that everyone should read.

An incredibly well-written story within the setting and horrors of World War II. Anthony Doerr has an exceptionally lyrical way of writing; he describes things in a way that I have not really read before. It makes the sights, sounds, and character experiences clear and real, drawing you deeper into the story.

This book kept my attention the whole way through, constantly wondering how everything would play out. I wanted to know how the characters ended up where they are and how all the stories will interlink and tie up.

It's a fabulous look at WW2 and that time in our history.

If you haven't read this already, then you absolutely need to.

A sweet Fantasy Romance suitable for YA readers, told in dual point of view.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. It was interesting and had twists I didn't see coming, keeping me wandering and engaged. I found that some of the chapters were too short (which is not something I say often), and I wanted more out of them. But, in the same breath, I also thought some places were too slow. A weird contradiction...

I found the ending a touch underwhelming; I wanted a bit more from it. It didn't draw the conclusions that I wanted or personally found satisfying. I wanted the main characters, Annika and Lennox, to prove themselves more.

Still an enjoyable read that will satisfy your love of fantasy and romance.

She Gets the Girl was one of those books for me. A sweet, slow-burn, coming-of-age story that leaves you feeling good.

This is one of those books I will happily reread one day. (Probably when I am reunited with my book collection and decide that I am going to reread everything!)

I love how more mythologies are being used for retellings and are more accessible and seen. If you haven't read this yet, you should. And if you DNF'd it before finishing it, give it another go. It's slow to start with, but it's so worth it!

Book Review: The Empyrean - Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Did I basically scream at this book and throw it because of how and where it ends? There is a chance. Did it give me a massive book hangover? Yes! It is also the first book I have rated 5 stars in 2025!

I don't think it is as good as Fourth Wing, but it was better than Iron Flame. I felt like Onyx Storm had a couple of twists that I didn't see coming. I did learn that I am going to have to do a reread of all the current Empyrean books before I read the fourth one, as I had forgotten SO MUCH!

I was worried after Iron Flame that I was going to lose interest in these books, but my faith has been restored, and I am very keen to read the next book. Why do I keep starting series that aren't finished? *sigh*

Another series I absolutely need to reread is Graceling, so I can read the two books I haven't read yet! I read the graphic novel, which was really fun but made me want to reread the actual book even more.

Review: Red Rising Saga - Morning Star by Pierce Brown

This series just keeps getting better. And is starting to convince me to try more science-fiction and dystopian books, genres which I have so often struggled with.

#morningstar is kind of the conclusion of the first part of the saga, it draws a lot of the storylines from the first two books to a close but is apparently only the beginning of the next part...

This review isn't going to be overly different from the ones for Red Rising and Golden Son. But oh well! It's fast-paced and engaging really drawing you in and making you question how it's all going to play out. I was never completely sure if it was actually going to be a 'happy' ending, and that more than anything kept me reading and on the edge of my seat. I did predict a couple of things at the end, but I was never sure if it would play out the way I suspected.

These books are so good and well worth giving a go even if they are a genre you would normally read.

Review: A Lady's Guide to Scandal by Sophie Irwin

I read A Lady's Guide to Scandal as an audiobook, and I really enjoyed it. Imogen Church - the narrator - really brought it to life, adding so much emotion, humour, and life to the characters, making it a fun book to listen to.

I also enjoyed the story as a whole. It is a satisfying regency romance with excellent character development, especially for the main character, Eliza. Who you can't help but cheer along and root for as you read, and roll your eyes at, too.

It was a fun read and well worth giving a go.

I really enjoyed Radio Silence. I tend to enjoy Alice Oseman's books and stories anyway, so I wasn't overly surprised. It's well written and engaging.

I also think it's really relatable, looking into school pressure, trying to work out what you want to do in the future if you're going to university and what you are then going to study, friendships and relationships, and discovering who you are and who you are going to be.

It's really good and well worth the read.

I have to say that Nikolai is one of my favourite characters from the #grishaverse, and so I was pretty excited to have some books from his point of view. However, I don't think this book was as strong or as good as Six of Crows.

As I was reading this, I was quite intrigued about where the story would go and where these would take the general Grishaverse stories.

I went into Find Me After expecting it to be similar to They Both Die at The End, but it wasn't. I was well and truly engaged from the first word and just wanted to be reading it every minute.

The story and characters kept my attention, but I was really curious about the 'Stillness', the place some people go to when they are unconscious, the place between life and death, and where Kyle goes to when he has an epileptic fit.

It was different to what I was expecting, but still really good. I was left with so many questions, however, and that made it feel a bit unresolved, but that didn't take away from how much I enjoyed it.

I went into Find Me After expecting it to be similar to They Both Die at The End, but it wasn't. I was well and truly engaged from the first word and just wanted to be reading it every minute.

Review: Golden Son by Pierce Brown - Red Rising Saga 2

I must admit that it took me a little to get back into this series, but once I did, I just inhaled Golden Son. I cannot get over how unpredictable these books are, and how much I am enjoying them. (Which perhaps says something about the other books I tend to pick up...😅)

The ending, without giving any spoilers, literally left me in shock! And left me hanging! Like, how do you end a book like that! It made me want to start Morning Star immediately to see what happens.

I cannot work out how anything will work out or even if it will be any form of a 'happy ending'.

These match the hype and positive reviews I have seen around them, and I recommend getting stuck in (if you do, please let me know, I need someone to talk about them with!).

Review: The Baby Dragon Cafe by A.T. Qureshi

I should have loved this book. A romance with dragons, I mean, is a combination that should be a 5-star read. But it just wasn't.

The Baby Dragon Cafe could have done with some more editing. The pieces of information were given so many times throughout the book that I got so frustrated with it. There were often dialogue pieces that seemed unnatural and ripped me out of the story. I don't really know why I didn't DNF it... I was so determined to love it but just didn't.

I'm still confused about the bee-stroking moment that happens in it... I just... what? Why?!!

I'm sad about it; it could have been so much better than it is...

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak has been sitting on my TBR (to be read) list for a long time, so it was rather nice to tick it off. I had very little knowledge of what this book was like before I got into reading it. I did know that it was a book set in World War Two Germany, that there was a movie based on it, and that there was a lot of praise for it.

First, I must admit that I listened to it as an audiobook, and I don’t think I would have finished it if I had read it. Something about the language and pace of the book would have meant I would have struggled. So there is a tip or hack for you; if there is a book you want to read but are struggling with it, try it as an audiobook or vice versa.

I think the thing that makes the Book Thief stand out is that it is told from Death’s point of view. It is death who is recounting Liesel’s story and the stories of those around her. From her own writing and as a witness, as Death himself floating through war-torn Europe.

Even though Death tells us the story, there is still a strong sense of the innocence of childhood. This comes from Liesel, as she learns and witnesses and questions what is happening around her.

Zusak writes in such a lyrical way. The language, the descriptions and the narrative are captivating, bringing the setting and characters to life. The images created are so authentic you can’t help but feel, at times, that you are falling into the story and standing beside Death and witnessing it all, too.

The Book Thief is an honest and heartbreaking story set in World War Two. While it draws on actual events from that time, it is a fictional story, though I imagine it draws on some real stories. I recommend reading it. It’s one of those books I think everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.

Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

When I first discovered Booktok and Bookstagram, The Night Circus was everywhere. I felt like everything I was seeing was about it, and so, finally, I read it... and was really disappointed.

I did like the way it was written; incorporating second-person point of view chapters is so unique and really cool because of it. Honestly, I think it is something more people should do. Erin Morgenstern is also a really poetic author; she has impressive descriptions that bring the settings alive and paint a picture.

However, I found the story too slow and a bit boring. I also found it confusing with its jumps in time and POVs. I really struggled to get through it because of it.

As a writer, I am glad I have read it and seen second-person POV in action and how you can use different perspectives in one story. But I'm also not going to go about raving about it.

I loved the unpredictability of it. Every time I thought something was going to happen, everything would completely change, and I would yell, "What just happened!!??" at the book. I never knew how they would get out of situations or if there would even be a 'good' outcome.

Another thing that kept me engaged was how Pierce Brown writes. It's so descriptive, truly bringing the world and characters to life. You can picture everything and understand Darrow's thoughts and feelings.

I can't work out how this story continues or even guess what will happen next, and it makes me want to dive into the next book! The rave reviews I've seen about Red Rising are accurate, and I highly recommend giving it a go!

My first display in the school library I am now the librarian of.

Banned Books Week has arrived and I wanted to do something for it. This display has started so many amazing conversations among the students all wondering why the books have been banned or challenged around the world and throughout history.

As one student said: “Why are they trying to ban books about people who are different to them when you can read them to learn about different people and understand?”

I mean exactly! That is the whole point of this week!

On a side note I have now set the bar high for future displays… no pressure at all!
